On Saturday, October 2, 2021 hundreds of thousands of gallons of oil spilled into the Pacific Ocean due to a pipeline leak at an offshore oil rig. The Surfrider Foundation is in close contact with the agencies that are trying to minimize the damage to coastal ecosystems. Currently, the public are urged to not actively participate in the clean up as the oil is highly toxic. In this situation we can potentially cause more harm than good to affected wildlife. Those in the Huntington Beach & Newport area can help by taking photos of the impact as well as reporting affected wildlife to the UC Davis Oiled Wildlife Care Network (877-823-6926).
