The Jetty Clam Jam was born in 2007 out of the need to bring the Long Beach Island, NJ area surf community together. It is a team-oriented surf contest where surfers compete through an NCAA bracket style event. The team format that we use levels the playing field as the median age of all contestants provides a point to divide the surfers into two pools: A younger pool and an “experienced” pool. The median age usually falls between 26-28 years old, but participants range from ages 13 to 60! Once the surfers are divided, The Black Whale Bar & Fish House hosts a pre-event party in September where we select the teams (each surfer’s name is written on the inside of a clam shell)! The Clam Jam spent it’s first three years in Harvey Cedars, NJ, moved to Holgate, NJ for 2010 & 2011, and will return to Harvey Cedars in 2012! Invitations are sent to over 250 LBI-area surfers, but we warmly accept suggestions concerning surfers who you think should be invited! The Clam Jam has become a post-season tradition (waiting period begins in October) where beach goers can bring their families to watch a great exhibition of surfing as well as enjoy the threads and food provided by local business sponsors. Grab your kids and the dog…this is an event on LBI that you surely do not want to miss!
